For most commercial and multi-residential sites in Canada, powder-coated aluminum is the fence material that costs the least to own over 20 years, because it does not rust. Steel is stronger and cheaper to buy, and remains the right choice where a heavy anti-climb security fence is specified. Wrought iron gives a look nothing else quite matches, at a price and a maintenance schedule that few projects accept today. The honest answer is that the material follows the requirement: what the fence has to resist, how long it has to look new, and what the site can spend on upkeep. Corrosion is the Canadian question

Every fence in Canada spends part of the year wet, frozen, or coated in de-icing salt. Aluminum forms a thin oxide skin that protects the metal underneath; scratch it and the skin reforms. A powder coat on aluminum is there for colour and gloss, not to keep the metal alive. Steel is the opposite: the coating is the only thing between the metal and rust, and a chip at a weld or a fastener becomes a rust streak within a season. Galvanizing under the powder coat slows this considerably and is the right specification for any steel fence in Canada, but it does not remove the maintenance obligation.

Strength: steel wins, and it matters less than people think

Steel is roughly three times stiffer than aluminum for the same section, and a steel picket is harder to cut or bend. For a security fence that must resist a deliberate attack, that is decisive and steel is the correct material. For a perimeter fence on a condominium, a school, a clinic or a commercial plaza, the design loads are wind and the occasional impact, and an aluminum fence with properly sized posts and footings carries them without difficulty. Aluminum's lighter weight also means smaller footings and faster installation on podium slabs, where every anchor into the structure is coordinated with the engineer.

Cost over the life of the fence

Steel is cheaper to buy. Aluminum is cheaper to own. On a 20-year view, a steel fence that needs one full recoat (scaffold, surface preparation, paint, downtime) has usually cost more than the aluminum fence that needed a wash. Wrought iron is expensive at both ends. For a property manager, the question to ask on any fence quote is what the coating warranty says and who pays for the first recoat.

Aluminum is extruded, so the profile can be anything the die makes: blades with a precise gap, louvres that block sightlines, slats with a wood-grain finish, spears with cast tops. That is why contemporary commercial fencing is almost always aluminum. Steel is worked from tube and bar, which suits picket and welded-mesh security fences. Wrought iron is forged by hand, which is its appeal and its cost.
